A Visit With Scripture
– God’s Plan for Humanity –

4.5 Light of the World

Passing through the veil at the front of the tent of meeting of the Mosaic tabernacle, one moves into the Holy Place, which is the front 2/3’s of the tent of meeting, is 20 cubits long, is 10 cubits wide, and is 10 cubits high.  The third veil, separating the Holy Place and the Holy of Holies, has been identified with Jesus’ death, so the Holy Place represents the second phase of Jesus’ life, the time after His baptisms during which He ministers as the Christ, a life-giving spirit (1Cor 15:45).

The three furnishings within the Holy Place are the lampstand on the left (south) side, the table with twelve loaves of bread on the right (north) side, and the altar of incense at the back (west side) in front of the third and final veil.

“And you shall bring in the table and arrange what belongs on it; and you shall bring in the lanpstand and mount its lamps.  Moreover, you shall set the gold altar of incense before the ark of the testimony, and set up the veil for the doorway to the tabernacle.”  Exodus 40:4-5  NASB

Each of these furnishings within the Holy Place can be associated with a general characteristic of Jesus’ ministry as well as a specific event during Jesus’ ministry.  Because of the symbolic meaning of the number three, these three furnishings suggest divine completeness of Jesus’ ministry.

In this section, we discuss the lampstand with seven lamps, the menorah.

Then you shall make a lampstand of pure gold.  The lampstand and its base and its shaft are to be made of hammered work; its cups, its bulbs and its flowers shall be of one piece with it.  And six branches shall go out from its sides; three branches of the lampstand from its one side, and three branches of the lampstand from the other side.  …  Then you shall make its lamps seven in number; and they shall mount its lamps so as to shed light on the space in front of it.”  Exodus 25:31-32,37  NASB

Jesus appeared as a spiritual light during this fourth day/age of spiritual creation.

Again therefore Jesus spoke to them, saying, “I am the light of the world; he who follows Me shall not walk in the darkness, but shall have the light of life.”  John 8:12  NASB

“I have come as light into the world, that everyone who believes in Me may not remain in darkness.”  John 12:46  NASB

A light is placed on a lampstand for those in darkness.

“No one, after lighting a lamp, puts it away in a cellar, nor under a peck-measure, but on the lampstand, in order that those who enter may see the light.”  Luke 11:33  NASB

Thus, Jesus as the Light of the world was placed on a lampstand.

“As for the mystery of the seven stars which you saw in My right hand, and the seven golden lampstands; the seven stars are the angels of the seven churches, and the seven lampstands are the seven churches.”  Revelation 1:20  NASB

The seven lampstands associated with seven churches in the visions of Revelation suggest that the church, formed and active during Jesus’ ministry (Section 6.1), is the spiritual lampstand supporting Jesus as the Light to the world during His ministry and thereafter.

There was a particular event during which Jesus physically appeared as light.

And some eight days after these sayings, it came about that He took along Peter and John and James, and went up to the mountain to pray.  And while He was praying, the appearance of His face became different, and His clothing became white and gleaming.  And behold, two men were talking with Him; and they were Moses and Elijah, who, appearing in glory, were speaking of His departure which He was about to accomplish at Jerusalem Luke 9:28-31  NASB

During the transfiguration, Jesus’ divine nature was allowed to shine forth as a light-body.

And He was transfigured before them; and His face shone like the sun, and His garments became as white as light Matthew 17:2  NASB

As we discussed in Chapter 2 (Section 2.5), this is the same shinning or radiance that the man Adam had in the garden, for which he was referred to as the Morning Star or the Shinning One in Isaiah 14.

There are several important considerations regarding the transfiguration.  First, four men climbed the mountain, and four is representative of the earth.  Two came down from heaven, and two is representative of the divine duality of God the Father and Jesus the Son.  Moses and Elijah represent the spiritual past in the Old Testament of the Law (Moses, the law-giver) and the prophets (Elijah, the prophet).  Jesus’ life before His ministry was to fulfill the Law and to fulfill the prophets (Matt 11:13), and Jesus, Moses, and Elijah together in glory suggest divine completion of the Old Testament covenant.  On the other hand, the three disciples who came up the mountain with Jesus represent the spiritual future, the blessing/covenant of grace proclaimed by the church.

“And I also say to you that you are Peter, and upon this rock I will build My church; and the gates of Hades shall not overpower it.”  Matthew 16:18  NASB

Collectively, the six upon the mountain represent the transition from the Old Testament covenant of the Law and the prophets to the New Testament blessing/covenant of grace.  The total of those upon the mountain becomes seven when God Almighty joins them.

And while he was saying this, a cloud formed and began to overshadow them; and they were afraid as they entered the cloud.  And a voice came out of the cloud, saying, “This is My Son, My Chosen One; listen to Him!”  Luke 9:34-35  NASB

The three spirits from heaven–God Almighty, Moses, and Elijah–met with the four men from the earth.  There is spiritual perfection of humanity, represented by seven, when deity (1) joins with humanity (6).

Second, recall that God Almighty had already announced Jesus as His son to those gathered at Jesus’ baptism, so the announcement at Jesus’ transfiguration is a second time that God Almighty spoke from heaven about His son.  Given that the number three is representative of divine completeness, it should not be a surprise that there would be a third time when God Almighty spoke from heaven to humanity about His Son.

“Father, glorify Thy name.”  There came therefore a voice out of heaven: “I have both glorified it, and will glorify it again.”  The multitude therefore, who stood by and heard it, were saying that it had thundered; others were saying, “An angel has spoken to Him.”  Jesus answered and said, “This voice has not come for My sake, but for your sakes.”  John 12:28-30  NASB

Third, after resurrection, Moses and Elijah met Jesus upon a mountain.  In addition, while alive on earth, Moses and Elijah separately had the experience of meeting God Almighty upon His mountain.  Mount Horeb, which is also called Sinai, is holy ground because it is God Almighty’s mountain and His dwelling place.

Now Moses was pasturing the flock of Jethro his father-in-law, the priest of Midian; and he led the flock to the west side of the wilderness, and came to Horeb, the mountain of God.  …  Then He said, “Do not come near here; remove your sandals from your feet, for the place on which you are standing is holy ground.”  Exodus 3:1,5  NASB

During one of their meetings upon the mountain, God Almighty allowed Moses to see His glory in passing.  However, Moses, nor anyone else, can see God Almighty in His full glory and live.

But He said, You cannot see My face, for no man can see Me and live!”  Then the LORD said, “Behold, there is a place by Me, and you shall stand there on the rock; and it will come about, while My glory is passing by, that I will put you in the cleft of the rock and cover you with My hand until I have passed by.  Then I will take My hand away and you shall see My back, but My face shall not be seen.”  Exodus 33:20-23  NASB

Thus Moses, unable to look directly upon God Almighty, obliquely observed God Almighty and His glory as He passed by.  Elijah had a similar experience of not being able to look directly upon God Almighty’s glory while meeting with God Almighty upon Mount Horeb/Sinai.

So he [Elijah] arose and ate and drank, and went in the strength of that food forty days and forty nights to Horeb, the mountain of God.  …  So He said, “Go forth, and stand on the mountain before the LORD.”  And behold, the LORD was passing by!  …  And it came about when Elijah heard it, that he wrapped his face in his mantle, and went out and stood in the entrance of the cave.  And behold, a voice came to him and said, “What are you doing here, Elijah?”  1Kings 19:8,11,13  NASB

While upon the mountain, the glory of God Almighty was radiant and unbearable to humanity.  However, when God Almighty met Moses in the tent of meeting of the tabernacle, they could talk face to face.

And it came about, whenever Moses entered the tent, the pillar of cloud would descend and stand at the entrance of the tent; and the LORD would speak with Moses.  When all the people saw the pillar of cloud standing at the entrance of the tent, all the people would arise and worship, each at the entrance of his tent.  Thus the LORD used to speak to Moses face to face, just as a man speaks to his friend.  When Moses returned to the camp, his servant Joshua, the son of Nun, a young man, would not depart from the tent.  Exodus 33:9-11  NASB

The apostle Paul suggests an explanation for the ability to talk face to face with God Almighty when in the tent of meeting.

For we know that if the earthly tent which is our house is torn down, we have a building from God, a house not made with hands, eternal in the heavens 2Corinthians 5:1  NASB

In the earthly realm, there is the physical body, which Paul calls the earthly tent.  However, when this earthly tent is removed, there is a heavenly body, a building from God, a house not made with hands, eternal in the heavens.  The heavenly body has radiance or shinning described as appearing in glory and was exhibited by Moses and Elijah during the transfiguration upon the mountain (Luke 9:30-31).  However, Jesus exhibited this light-body/shinning/radiance only when His earthly tent was momentarily drawn aside while upon the mountain of transfiguration.  At all other times, His divine radiance was hidden by His physical body/earthly tent.  Likewise, the earthly tent of meeting of the tabernacle masked God Almighty’s glory/radiance/nature, just as the tent of the human body masked the glory of Jesus.  Thus Moses, unable to talk to God Almighty face to face upon the mountain, was able to do so with the aid of the earthly tent of meeting.  Thus, the unmasked glory of God Almighty upon the mountain is consistent with Jesus’ radiance upon the mount of transfiguration, and the masked glory of God Almighty in the tent of meeting is consistent with Jesus masked by His earthly tent.

Fourth, the two visitors from the heavenly realm at the transfiguration, Moses and Elijah, were prefigured in the life of Joseph, the son of Jacob who was sold into slavery and taken to Egypt.  After a time, Joseph was placed in a jail/dungeon (Gen 41:14) and was briefly visited there by two prisoners who came from the court of Pharaoh.  The following table develops this parallel between Joseph’s visitors and Jesus’ visitors.

The Visitations

Both men were loved by their father.  Joseph was the most loved son of Jacob/Israel.

Now Israel loved Joseph more than all his sons, because he was the son of his old age; and he made him a varicolored tunic.  Genesis 37:3  NASB

God Almighty loved His Son, Jesus.

And after being baptized, Jesus went up immediately from the water, and behold, the heavens were opened, and he saw the Spirit of God descending as a dove, and coming upon Him, and behold, a voice out of the heavens, saying, “This is My beloved Son, in whom I am well-pleased.”  Matthew 3:16-17  NASB

Both Joseph and Jesus were sent by their fathers to the flock.  Joseph was sent to his brothers with the flock.

And Israel said to Joseph, “Are not your brothers pasturing the flock in Shechem?  Come, and I will send you to them.”  And he said to him, “I will go.”  Then he said to him, “Go now and see about the welfare of your brothers and the welfare of the flock; and bring word back to me.”  So he went from the valley of Hebron, and he came to Shechem.  Genesis 37:13-14  NASB

Jesus was sent to the flock of house of Israel.

But He answered and said, “I was sent only to the lost sheep of the house of Israel.”  Matthew 15:22  NASB

Both Joseph and Jesus were to serve others.  Joseph was sold into slavery in Egypt.

Now Joseph had been taken down to Egypt; and Potiphar, an Egyptian officer of Pharaoh, the captain of the bodyguard, bought him from the Ishmaelites, who had taken him down there.  Genesis 39:1  NASB

Jesus came to humanity to serve.

“But it is not so among you, but whoever wishes to become great among you shall be your servant; and whoever wishes to be first among you shall be slave of all.  For even the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give His life a ransom for many.”  Mark 10:43-45  NASB

Both Joseph and Jesus were falsely accused.  Joseph was falsely accused by his master’s wife.

Then she [Potiphar’s wife] spoke to him with these words, “The Hebrew slave, whom you brought to us, came in to me to make sport of me; and it happened as I raised my voice and screamed, that he left his garment beside me and fled outside.”  Genesis 39:17-18  NASB

Jesus was falsely accused by His brethren.

And when His own people heard of this, they went out to take custody of Him; for they were saying, “He has lost his senses.”  And the scribes who came down from Jerusalem were saying, “He is possessed by Beelzebul,” and “He casts out the demons by the ruler of the demons.”  Mark 3:21-22  NASB

Both Joseph and Jesus go to different places.  Joseph is sent to jail/dungeon.

So Joseph’s master took him and put him into jail, the place where the king’s prisoners were confined; and he was there in jail.  Genesis 39:20  NASB

Jesus went upon a mountain.

And six days later Jesus took with Him Peter and James and John his brother, and brought them up to a high mountain by themselves.  Matthew 17:1  NASB

Both Joseph and Jesus were visited by two from a higher realm.  Joseph is visited by two from the court of Pharaoh.

And Pharaoh was furious with his two officials, the chief cupbearer and the chief baker.  So he put them in confinement in the house of the captain of the bodyguard, in the jail, the same place where Joseph was imprisoned.  Genesis 40:2-3  NASB

On the mountain, Jesus was visited by the resurrected Moses and Elijah from heaven.

And behold, two men were talking with Him; and they were Moses and Elijah,  Luke 9:30  NASB

Both Joseph and Jesus exhibited divine attributes.  Joseph had the ability to interpret dreams.

Then they said to him, “We have had a dream and there is no one to interpret it.”  Then Joseph said to them, “Do not interpretations belong to God?  Tell it to me, please.”  …  Then Joseph said to him, “This is the interpretation of it:  the three branches are three days Genesis 40:8,12  NASB

Jesus had the light-body due to the indwelling of God Almighty’s nature.

And He was transfigured before them; and His face shone like the sun, and His garments became as white as light.  Matthew 17:2  NASB

Both Joseph and Jesus discussed future events with the visitors.  Joseph told what will happen within three days.

within three more days Pharaoh will lift up your head and restore you to your office; and you will put Pharaoh’s cup into his hand according to your former custom when you were his cupbearer.  …  Then Joseph answered and said, “This is its interpretation:  the three baskets are three days; within three more days Pharaoh will lift up your head from you and will hang you on a tree; and the birds will eat your flesh off you.”  Genesis 40:13,18-19  NASB

Jesus talked with Moses and Elijah about His impending death.

And behold, two men were talking with Him; and they were Moses and Elijah, who, appearing in glory, were speaking of His departure which He was about to accomplish at Jerusalem.  Luke 9:30-31  NASB

Both Joseph and Jesus gave instructions about speaking of this visit.  Joseph asked that he be mentioned to Pharaoh.

“Only keep me in mind when it goes well with you, and please do me a kindness by mentioning me to Pharaoh, and get me out of this house.”  Genesis 40:14  NASB

Jesus commanded His disciples not to mention His transfiguration until after His resurrections.

And as they were coming down from the mountain, He gave them orders not to relate to anyone what they had seen, until the Son of Man should rise from the dead.  Mark 9:9  NASB

After a while, both men were brought up to a new place.  Moses was brought up from the dungeon to the court of Pharaoh.

Then Pharaoh sent and called for Joseph, and they hurriedly brought him out of the dungeon; and when he had shaved himself and changed his clothes, he came to Pharaoh Genesis 41:14  NASB

Jesus was brought up to heaven.

And after He had said these things, He was lifted up while they were looking on, and a cloud received him out of their sight.  Acts 1:9  NASB

Both men were made ruler of the domain.  Joseph was made ruler of all of Egypt.

And Pharaoh said to Joseph, “See I have set you over all the land of Egypt.”  Genesis 41:41  NASB

Jesus was made ruler of all creation.

which He brought about in Christ, when He raised Him from the dead; and seated Him at his right hand in the heavenly places, far above all rule and authority and power and dominion, and every name that is named, not only in this age, but also in the one to come.  Ephesians 1:20-21  NASB

Thus, the visitors with Joseph in the dungeon are a type for the visitors with Jesus on the mountain.

Jesus’ ministry, as the light of the world, was mainly within the Jewish community (Matt 15:24).  However, he was also a light to Gentiles.  In His home town, when Jesus pointed out that Elijah and Elisha ministered to the Gentiles, there was rage.

And He said, “Truly I say to you, no prophet is welcome in his home town.  But I say to you in truth, there were many widows in Israel in the days of Elijah, when the sky was shut up for three years and six months, when a great famine came over all the land; and yet Elijah was sent to none of them, but only to Zarephath, in the land of Sidon, to a woman who was a widow.  And there were many lepers in Israel in the time of Elisha the prophet; and none of them was cleansed, but only Naaman the Syrian.”  And all in the synagogue were filled with rage as they heard these things Luke 4:24-28  NASB

Here, Jesus identifies Himself as a prophet and relates His ministry with specific events in the lives of the prophets Elijah and Elisha.  Thus, Jesus’ ministry as the light of the world had a prophetic aspect in the tradition of the great prophets like Elijah and Elisha.  In the following chart, we match events from Elisha’s ministry with events from Jesus’ ministry.

Ministry

Both Elisha and Jesus, as they prepared for their ministries, received an anointing that signifies their role.  Elisha was anointed by Elijah as his successor.

“and Jehu the son of Nimshi you shall anoint king over Israel; and Elisha the son of Shaphat of Abel-meholah you shall anoint as prophet in your place.”  …  So he departed from there and found Elisha the son of Shaphat, while he was plowing with twelve pairs of oxen before him, and he with the twelfth.  And Elijah passed over to him and threw his mantle on him 1Kings 19:16,19  NASB

Jesus was anointed by John to succeed John.

“This is He on behalf of whom I said, ‘After me comes a Man who has a higher rank than I, for He existed before me.’  And I did not recognize Him, but in order that He be manifested to Israel, I came baptizing in water.”  John 1:30-31  NASB

Both Elisha and Jesus received a special anointing from God Almighty.  Elisha received a double portion of Elijah’s spirit.

Now it came about when they had crossed over, that Elijah said to Elisha, “Ask what I shall do for you before I am taken from you.”  And Elisha said, “Please, let a double portion of your spirit be upon me.”  …  Then it came about as they were going along and talking, that behold, there appeared a chariot of fire and horses of fire which separated the two of them.  And Elijah went up by a whirlwind to heaven 2Kings 2:9,11  NASB

At His baptism, Jesus received the Holy Spirit without measure, and God Almighty, with a voice from heaven, declared Jesus a mature Son.

And after being baptized, Jesus went up immediately from the water; and behold, the heavens were opened, and he saw the Spirit of God descending as a dove, and coming upon Him, and behold, a voice out of the heavens, saying, “This is My beloved Son, in whom I am well-pleased.”  Matthew 3:16-17

Elisha and Jesus performed a miracle by transforming water.  Elisha purified a spring with bad water.

Then the men of the city said to Elisha, “Behold now, the situation of this city is pleasant, as my lord sees; but the water is bad, and the land is unfruitful.”  And he said, “Bring me a new jar, and put salt in it.”  So they brought it to him.  And he went out to the spring of water, and threw salt in it and said, “Thus says the LORD, ‘I have purified these waters; there shall not be from there death or unfruitfulness any longer.’ ”  So the waters have been purified to this day, according to the word of Elisha which he spoke 2Kings 2:19-22  NASB

Jesus turned water into wine at a wedding.

And on the third day there was a wedding in Cana of Galilee;  …  Now there were six stone waterpots set there for the Jewish custom of purification, containing twenty or thirty gallons each.  Jesus said to them, Fill the waterpots with water.”  And they filled them up to the brim.  And He said to them, “Draw some out now, and take it to the headwaiter.”  And they took it to him.  And when the headwaiter tasted the water which had become wine, and did not know where it came from (but the servants who had drawn the water knew), the headwaiter called the bridegroom, and said to him, “Every man serves the good wine first, and when men have drunk freely, then that which is poorer; you have kept the good wine until now.”  John 2:1,6-10  NASB

Both Elisha and Jesus brought water to sustain life.  Elisha brought water for the army in the desert.

And he [Elisha] said, “Thus says the LORD, ‘Make this valley full of trenches.’  For thus says the LORD, ‘You shall not see wind nor shall you see rain; yet that valley shall be filled with water, so that you shall drink, both you and your cattle and your beasts.”  …  And it happened in the morning about the time of offering the sacrifice, that behold, water came by the way of Edom, and the country was filled with water.  2Kings 3:16-17,20  NASB

Jesus brought living water to a spiritual desert.

Jesus answered and said to her, “Everyone who drinks of this water shall thirst again; but whoever drinks of the water that I shall give him shall never thirst; but the water that I shall give him shall become in him a well of water springing up to eternal life.  John 4:13-14  NASB

Both Elisha and Jesus retrieved metal objects from beneath the water.  Elisha recovered an axe head from the water.

But as one was felling a beam, the axe head fell into the water; and he cried out and said, “Alas, my master!  For it was borrowed.”  Then the man of God said, “Where did it fall?”  And when he showed him the place, he cut off a stick, and threw it in there, and made the iron float.  2Kings 6:5-6  NASB

Jesus retrieved a coin from the water.

But lest we give them offense, go to the sea, and throw in a hook, and take the first fish that comes up; and when you open its mouth, you will find a staterTake that and give it to them for you and Me.”  Matthew 17:27  NASB

Elisha and Jesus provided food for people on several occasions.  Elisha provided oil for a widow’s monetary debt.

And Elisha said to her, “What shall I do for you? Tell me, what do you have in the house?”  And she said, “Your maidservant has nothing in the house except a jar of oil.”  Then he said, “Go, borrow vessels at large for yourself from all your neighbors, even empty vessels; do not get a few.  And you shall go in and shut the door behind you and yours sons, and pour out into all these vessels; and you shall set aside what is full.”  So she went from him and she shut the door behind her and her sons; they were bringing the vessels to her and she poured.  And it came about when the vessels were full, that she said to her son, “Bring me another vessel.”  And he said to her, “There is not one vessel more.”  And the oil stopped.  Then she came and told the man of God.  And he said, “Go, sell the oil and pay your debt, and you and yours sons can live on the rest.”  2Kings 4:2-7  NASB

Jesus fed 4,000 with barley loaves and small fish.

And He was asking them, “How many loaves do you have?”  And they said, “Seven.”  And He directed the multitude to sit down on the ground; and taking the seven loaves, He gave thanks and broke them, and began giving them to His disciples to serve to them, and they served them to the multitudeThey also had a few small fish; and after He had blessed them, He ordered these to be served as well.  And they ate and were satisfied; and they picked up seven full baskets of what was left over of the broken pieces.  And about four thousand were there; and He sent them away.  Mark 8:5-9  NASB

Both Elisha and Jesus provided food for a crowd.  Elisha fed a crowd with barley bread.

Now a man came from Baal-shalishah, and brought the man of God bread of the first fruits, twenty loaves of barley and fresh ears of grain in his sack.  And he said, “Give them to the people that they may eat.”  And his attendant said, “What, shall I set this before a hundred men?”  But he said, “Give them to the people that they may eat, for thus says the LORD, ‘They shall eat and have some left over.’ ”  So he set it before them, and they ate and had some left over, according to the word of the LORD 2Kings 4:42-44  NASB

Jesus, on another occasion, fed a crowd of five thousand with five barley loaves and two fish.

One of His disciples, Andrew, Simon Peter’s brother, said to Him, “There is a lad here, who has five barley loaves, and two fish; but what are these for so many people?”  Jesus said, “Have the people sit down.”  Now there was much grass in the place.  So the men sat down, in number about five thousandJesus therefore took the loaves; and having given thanks, He distributed to those who were seated; likewise also of the fish as much as they wanted.  And when they were filled, He said to His disciples, “Gather up the leftover fragments that nothing may be lost.”  And so they gathered them up, and filled twelve baskets with fragments from the five barley loaves, which were left over by those who had eaten.  John 6:8-13  NASB

Elisha and Jesus healed the physical body of leprosy.  Elisha cured Naaman of leprosy.

Now Naaman, captain of the army of the king of Syria, was a great man with his master, and highly respected, because by him the LORD had given victory to Syria.  The man was also a valiant warrior, but he was a leper.  …  So Naaman came with his horses and his chariots, and stood at the doorway of the house of Elisha.  And Elisha sent a messenger to him, saying, “Go and wash in the Jordan seven times, and your flesh shall be restored to you and you shall be clean.”  …  So he went down and dipped himself seven times in the Jordan, according to the word of the man of God; and his flesh was restored like the flesh of a little child, and he was clean 2Kings 5:1,9-10,14  NASB

Jesus healed a man of leprosy.

And a leper came to Him, beseeching Him and falling on his knees before Him, and saying to Him, “If You are willing, You can make me clean.”  And moved with compassion, He stretched out His hand and touched him, and said to him. “I am willing; be cleansed.”  And immediately the leprosy left him and he was cleansed Mark 1:40-42  NASB

Both Elisha and Jesus restored the dead.  Elisha restored life to the son of the Shunamite woman’s son.

When Elisha came into the house, behold the lad was dead and laid on his bedSo he entered and shut the door behind them both, and prayed to the LORD.  And he went up and lay on the child, and put his mouth on his mouth, and his eyes on his eyes and his hands on his hands, and he stretched himself on him; and the flesh of the child became warm.  Then he returned and walked in the house once back and forth, and went up and stretched himself on him; and the lad sneezed seven times and the lad opened his eyes 2Kings 4:32-35  NASB

Jesus restored life to Lazarus.

And when He had said these things, He cried out with a loud voice, “Lazarus, come forth.”  He who had died came forth, bound hand and foot with wrappings; and his face was wrapped around with a cloth.  Jesus said to them, “Unbind him, and let him go.”  John 11:43-44  NASB

A body came to life in the tomb of Elisha and in the tomb of Jesus.  A man put into Elisha’s tomb came to life.

And Elisha died, and they buried him.  Now the bands of the Moabites would invade the land in the spring of the year.  And as they were burying a man, behold, they saw a marauding band; and they cast the man into the grave of ElishaAnd when the man touched the bones of Elisha he revived and stood up on his feet 2Kings 13:20-21  NASB

Of course, Jesus was resurrected from His tomb.

And entering the tomb, they saw a young man sitting at the right, wearing a white robe; and they were amazed.  And he said to them, “Do not be amazed; you are looking for Jesus the Nazarene, who has been crucifiedHe has risen; He is not here; behold, here is the place where they laid Him.”  Mark 16:5-6  NASB

We have shown a commonality of events in the ministries of Elisha and Jesus, the light of the world.
