A Visit With Scripture
– God’s Plan for Humanity –

7.4 Day of Atonement–Grace

The two, spring, grain-harvest feasts mandated in the Mosaic Law involved activities for each household of the Israelites.  For Unleavened Bread, each household eliminated leaven and chose and prepared a lamb without blemish as the meat for the Passover meal.  For Pentecost/Weeks, each household waved two loaves of leavened bread as an offering to God Almighty.  However, with the second festival of the Feast of Tabernacles/Booths, the Day of Atonement, activity shifted from each household to the high priest who preformed duties on behalf of the entire congregation.

Jesus is high priest for all of humanity, and the Book of Hebrews, among other things, makes this case.

Therefore, He had to be made like His brethren in all things, that He might become a merciful and faithful high priest in things pertaining to God, to make propitiation for the sins of the people.  Hebrews 2:17  NASB

Since then we have a great high priest who has passed through the heavens, Jesus the Son of God, let us hold fast our confession. Hebrews 4:14  NASB  (See also Hebrews 5:7-10, and 7:28-8:2)

Unlike the high priests who could only serve for a time, Jesus after resurrection is a high priest forever.

This hope we have as an anchor of the soul, a hope both sure and steadfast and one which enters within the veil, where Jesus has entered as a forerunner for us, having become a high priest forever according to the order of Melchizedek.  Hebrews 6:19-20  NASB

Because Abraham paid tribute to Melchizedek, King of Salem and priest of the Most High God (Ex 14:17-20), he is a revered person in the Hebrew tradition.  Therefore, the comparison of Jesus to Melchizedek associates Jesus with the pinnacle of Jewish tradition.

Jesus, after His resurrection and before He sat down in heaven, fulfilled the duties of the high priest and the associated ceremonies on the Day of Atonement and provided a pattern for the implementation of the blessings of grace and mercy in the afterlife.

Now the main point in what has been said is this:  we have such a high priest, who has taken His seat at the right hand of the throne of the Majesty in the heavens, a minister in the sanctuary, and in the true tabernacle, which the Lord pitched, not man.  Hebrews 8:1-2  NASB

On the Day of Atonement, animals were offered as atonement for the sins of all the people of Israel.

And the LORD spoke to Moses, saying, “On exactly the tenth day of this seventh month is the day of atonement; it shall be a holy convocation for you, and you shall humble your souls and present an offering by fire to the LORDNeither shall you do any work on this same day, for it is a day of atonement, to make atonement on your behalf before the LORD your God.”  Leviticus 23:26-28 NASB

The prohibition of any work on this day is a clear indication that the atonement of the congregation is achieved, not by the efforts of the individual, but rather by activities of the high priest on behalf of the congregation.  Here then is an indication that one’s atonement is not achieved by one’s efforts but is achieved by our spiritual high priest–Jesus Christ.

The ceremonies on the Day of Atonement began with the high priest designating by lot two goats for different roles.

“And he [the high priest] shall take from the congregation of the sons of Israel two male goats for a sin offering and one ram for a burnt offering.  …  And he shall take the two goats and present them before the LORD at the doorway of the tent of meeting.  And Aaron shall cast lots for the two goats, one lot for the LORD and the other lot for the scapegoat.  Then Aaron shall offer the goat on which the lot for the LORD fell, and make it a sin offering.  But the goat on which the lot for the scapegoat fell, shall be presented alive before the LORD, to make atonement upon it, to send it into the wilderness as the scapegoat.”  Leviticus 16:5,7-10  NASB

These two goats, the means of atonement for the sins of the congregation of Israelites, represent God Almighty’s two blessings of atonement–grace and mercy.  The ceremony of the sacrificial goat for the Lord represents the covenant/blessing of grace.  The ceremony of the scapegoat represents the blessing of mercy to be implemented for those sent by judgment to the lake of fire/hell.  Jesus in His first coming fulfilled all three roles–the high priest, the sacrificial goat, and the scapegoat–and thereby completed the atonement of all humanity.

The Day of Atonement is the only day when anyone, and then only the high priest, was allowed to enter the Holy of Holies, the place of God Almighty’s presence within the Mosaic tabernacle.

And the LORD said to Moses, “Tell your brother Aaron that he shall not enter at any time into the holy place [Holy of Holies] inside the veil, before the mercy seat which is on the ark, lest he die; for I will appear in the cloud over the mercy seat.”  Leviticus 16:2

The high priest on the Day of Atonement must be cleansed and properly dressed before he began his important duties within the Holy of Holies.

Aaron shall enter the holy place [Holy of Holies] with thiswith a bull for a sin offering and a ram for a burnt offeringHe shall put on the holy linen tunic, and the linen undergarments shall be next to his body, and he shall be girded with the linen sash, and attired with the linen turban (these are holy garments)Then he shall bathe his body in water and put them on.”  Leviticus 16:3-4  NASB

Likewise, Jesus was cleansed by His resurrection and clothed with the spiritual body in preparation for His duties as high priest.

After being ceremonially cleansed, the high priest was to remain untouched until after he had returned from God Almighty’s presence in the Holy of Holies.

When he [the high priest] goes in to make atonement in the holy place, no one shall be in the tent of meeting until he comes out, that he may make atonement for himself and for his household and for all the assembly of Israel.”  Leviticus 16:17  NASB

Jesus, after he was cleansed and prior to presenting His blood to God Almighty, makes His appearance to Mary Magdalene.

The first day of the week cometh Mary Magdalene early, when it was yet dark, unto the sepulcher, and seeth the stone taken away from the sepulchre.  …  Jesus saith unto her, Mary.  She turned herself, and saith unto Him, Rabboni; which is to say, Master.  Jesus saith unto her, Touch me not; for I am not yet ascended to my Father; but go to my brethren, and say unto them, I ascend unto my Father, and your Father; and to my God, and your God  John 20:1,16-17  KJV

Mary Magdalene was not allowed to touch Jesus because He had not yet ascended to My Father.  Therefore, early in the morning and before the time for any ceremony, Jesus, cleansed and prepared to perform His duties as high priest, must remain undefiled and untouched by Mary Magdalene, or anyone one else.  Later, after Jesus performed the duties of atonement as the high priest, there was no longer any restriction upon His interactions with humanity.  Then, disciples where allowed to touch Him.

And after eight days again His disciples were inside, and Thomas with them.  Jesus came, the doors having been shut, and stood in their midst, and said, “Peace be with you.”  Then He said to Thomas, Reach here your finger, and see My hands; reach here your hand, and put it into My side; and be not unbelieving, but believe.”  John 20:26-27  NASB

The high priest, possibly at the third hour on the Day of Atonement when the morning offerings were made, took the blood of the sacrificial goat for the Lord into the Holy of Holies, the place of God Almighty’s presence.  The blood of the sacrificial goat made atonement for all the sins of the congregation of Israel.

Now when these things have been thus prepared, the priests are continually entering the outer tabernacle, performing the divine worship, but into the second only the high priest enters, once a year, not without taking blood, which he offers for himself and for the sins of the people committed in ignorance.  Hebrews 9:6-7  NASB

With respect to the Festival of Passover, the events of Jesus’ sacrificial offering as the Lamb of Passover adhered to the prescribed times of the daily temple services.  Specifically, Jesus was crucified at the third hour, the time of the morning temple offerings (Mark 15:25), and Jesus died at the ninth hour (Mark 15:33-37), the time of the evening temple offerings.  Similarly, we may expect that Jesus’ duties as high priest on the Day of Atonement occurred in accordance with the designated times of the ceremonies.

But when Christ appeared as a high priest of the good things to come, He entered through the greater and more perfect tabernacle, not made with hands, that is to say, not of this creation; and not through the blood of goats and calves, but through His own blood, He entered the holy place once for all, having obtained eternal redemption.  …  For Christ did not enter a holy place made with hands, a mere copy of the true one, but into heaven itself, now to appear in the presence of God for us;  Hebrews 9:11-12,24  NASB

The many sacrificial offerings of the Mosaic Law, whether daily or annually, were collectively a type for that which Jesus did once for all.

For it was fitting that we should have such a high priest, holy, innocent, undefiled, separated for sinners and exalted above the heavens; who does not need daily, like those high priests, to offer up sacrifices, first for His own sins, and then for the sins of the people, because this He did once for all when He offered up Himself.  Hebrews 7:26-27  NASB

Because Jesus’ sacrifice fulfilled all requirements prescribed in the Law for the removal of sin from humanity, there was no need for future sacrifices.   Therefore, Jesus’ death and resurrection fulfilled the sacrificial rites, which began in the tabernacle and later moved to the temple in Jerusalem, and brought an end to the need for them.  We can see evidence of the end of the temple rites with the golden altar of incense, which was tended twice daily by priests in the Holy Place.  However, on the Day of Atonement, the golden altar of incense was brought into the Holy of Holies.

“And he shall take a firepan full of coals of fire from upon the altar before the LORD, and two handfuls of finely ground sweet incense, and bring it inside the veil.  And he shall put the incense on the fire before the LORD, that the cloud of incense may cover the mercy seat that is on the ark of the testimony, lest he die.”  Leviticus 16:12-13  NASB

The apostle Paul made note of the finality of Jesus’ work of atonement by indicating that, after Jesus’ resurrection, the golden altar of incense remained within the Holy of Holies.

And behind the second veil, there was a tabernacle which is called the Holy of Holies, having a golden altar of incense and the ark of the covenant covered on all sides with gold, in which was a golden jar holding manna, and Aaron’s rod which budded, and the tables of the covenant.  Hebrews 9:3-4  NASB

Here then we have the suggestion that, just as Jesus went into the presence of God Almighty in heaven and remains there, so also the altar of incense was brought into the Holy of Holies and the presence of God Almighty and remained there,.

For Christ did not enter a holy place made with hands, a mere copy of the true one, but into heaven itself, now to appear in the presence of God for us; nor was it that He should offer Himself often, as the high priest enters the holy place year by year with blood not his own.  Otherwise, He would have needed to suffer often since the foundation of the world; but now once at the consummation He has been manifested to put away sin by the sacrifice of Himself Hebrews 9:24-26  NASB

There is no longer any need for a ceremony to remove sins, for all sins have been completely and finally put away by Jesus’ crucifixion, resurrection, and ascension into heaven.  Hence, Jesus fulfilled the role of the high priest on the Day of Atonement.

We next show that Jesus fulfilled the role of the goat for the Lord in the day of atonement ceremony.

Table 7.2 Jesus as Goat for the Lord

Roles are determined by lot.  The role for the two goats on the Day of Atonement was determined by lot.

And Aaron shall cast lots for the two goats, one lot for the LORD and the other lot for the scapegoat Leviticus 16:8  NASB

Likewise, the role of the lot for the Lord came upon Jesus when He and Barabbas were presented to the multitude gathered before Pontius Pilate, the governing authority appointed by Rome.  Jesus was chosen by “lot” to die when the multitude decided who would be released and who would not.

Now at the feast he used to release for them any one prisoner whom they requested.  And the man named Barabbas had been imprisoned with the insurrectionists who had committed murder in the insurrection.  And the multitude went up and began asking him to do as he had been accustomed to do for them.  And Pilate answered them, saying, “Do you want me to release for you the King of the Jews?”  For he was aware that the chief priests had delivered Him up because of envy.  But the chief priests stirred up the multitude to ask him to release Barabbas for them instead.  And answering again, Pilate was saying to them, “Then what shall I do to Him whom you call the King of the Jews?”  And they shouted back, “Crucify Him!”  But Pilate was saying to them , “Why, what evil has He done?”  But they shouted all the more, “Crucify Him!”  And wishing to satisfy the multitude, Pilate released Barabbas for them, and after having Jesus scourged, he delivered Him over to be crucified Mark 15:6-15  NASB

Thus, the lot as a sacrificial offering fell upon Jesus.

Both were offered for the benefit of others.  The high priest offered the goat for the Lord as a sin offering to God Almighty on behalf of the congregation.

“Then Aaron shall offer the goat on which the lot for the LORD fell, and make it a sin offering.”  Leviticus 16:9  NASB

Likewise, the high priest designated Jesus as the One to die on behalf of the congregation of Israelites.

Now Caiaphas [the high priest] was the one who had advised the Jews that it was expedient for one man [Jesus] to die on behalf of the people.  John 18:14  NASB

Both were slain.  The slain lamb provided its blood on behalf of others.

“Then he [the high priest] shall slaughter the goat of the sin offering which is for the people, and bring its blood inside the veil, and do with its blood as he did with blood of the bull, and sprinkle it on the mercy seat and in front of the mercy seat.”  Leviticus 16:15  NASB

As with the sacrificial goat, blood was drawn from Jesus after His death.

The soldiers therefore came, and broke the legs of the first man, and of the other man who was crucified with Him; but coming to Jesus, when they saw that He was already dead, they did not break His legs; but one of the soldiers pierced His side with a spear, and immediately there came out blood and water John 19:32-34  NASB

Jesus’ blood, drawn by a spear, when “applied” to an individual provides escape from the wrath of God which will be delivered as the consequence of judgment.

But God demonstrates His own love toward us, in that while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us.  Much more then, having now been justified by His blood, we shall be saved from the wrath of God through Him.  Romans 5:8-9  NASB

The bodies of those offered were placed outside.  The body of the sacrificial goat was burned outside the camp.

“But the bull of the sin offering and the goat of the sin offering, whose blood was brought in to make atonement in the holy place, shall be taken outside the camp, and they shall burn their hides, their flesh, and their refuse in the fire.”  Leviticus 16:27  NASB

The writer of Hebrews, making the association of Jesus with the sacrificial goat for the Lord, noted that Jesus was crucified outside the wall of Jerusalem in accordance with this mandate.

For the bodies of those animals whose blood is brought into the holy place by the high priest as an offering for sin, are burned outside the camp.  Therefore Jesus also, that He might sanctify the people through His own blood, suffered outside the gate Hebrews 13:11-12  NASB

Thus, the sacrifice of the goat for the Lord on the Day of Atonement was an annual observance that foreshadowed the future sacrifice of Jesus.

Jesus’ fulfillment of the roles of the high priest and the goat for the Lord enabled the covenant/blessing of grace for those called and chosen by God Almighty.  In Chapter 5, we discussed the covenant/blessing of grace and concentrated on the impact of upon the individual while upon earth.  Here, we will consider the impact of the blessing of grace upon the individual in the afterlife.

In the last section, we considered the end of spiritual day/age 7 when, after the rule and reign of Jesus and His body during the millennium, Satan will be released from imprisonment in the abyss to make war with the saints.  Divinely, Satan and his minions will be defeated and will be thrown into the lake of fire/hell (Rev 20:10).  Then, it will be time for the fourth and last resurrection event that will initiate judgment day.

Do not marvel at this; for an hour is coming, in which all who are in the tombs shall hear His voice, and shall come forth; those who did the good deeds, to a resurrection of life, those who committed the evil deeds to a resurrection of judgment.  John 5:28-29  NASB

Therefore, the accumulated dead who have not already been resurrected along with any who may be alive will face the day of judgment.

So then each one of us shall give account of himself to God.  Romans 14:12  NASB

Humanity will be judged by the Lord Jesus Christ in the eternal life-or-second death event that was foreshadowed by the original Passover in Egypt.

For we must all appear before the judgment seat of Christ, that each one may be recompensed for his deeds in the body, according to what he has done, whether good or bad 2Corinthians 5:10  NASB

Jesus spoke of this day when He will righteously judge humanity.

“And I say to you, that every careless word that men shall speak, they shall render account for it in the day of judgment.”  Matthew 12:36  NASB

“But when the Son of Man comes in His glory, and all the angels with Him, then He will sit on His glorious throne.  And all the nations will be gathered before Him; and He will separate them from one another, as the shepherd separates the sheep from the goats; and He will put the sheep on His right, and the goats on the left.  Then the King will say to those on His right, ‘Come, you who are blessed of My Father, inherit the kingdom prepared for you from the foundation of the world.’   …  Then He will also say to those on His left, ‘Depart from Me, accursed ones, into the eternal fire which has been prepared for the devil and his angels;’ ”  Matthew 25:31-34,41  NASB

Here is judgment day portrayed in the visions of Revelation.

And I saw a great white throne and Him who sat upon it, from whose presence earth and heaven fled away, and no place was found for them.  And I saw the dead, the great and the small, standing before the throne, and books were opened; and another book was opened, which is the book of life; and the dead were judged from the things which were written in the books, according to their deeds.  And the sea gave up the dead which were in it, and death and Hades gave up the dead which were in them; and they were judged, every one of them according to their deeds.  And death and Hades were thrown into the lake of fire.  This is the second death, the lake of fire.  And if anyone’s name was not found written in the book of life, he was thrown into the lake of fire Revelation 20:11-15  NASB

On judgment day, those who have been called and chosen by God Almighty to receive the blessing of grace will receive eternal life and thus escape the consequence of their sins.

“And this is eternal life, that they may know Thee, the only true God, and Jesus Christ whom Thou hast sent.”  John 17:3  NASB

The unredeemed sinners will receive the judgment of the second death, i.e., to be thrown into the lake of eternal fire/hell.

For if we go on sinning willfully after receiving the knowledge of the truth, there no longer remains a sacrifice for sins, but a certain terrifying expectation of judgment, and THE FURY OF A FIRE WHICH WILL CONSUME THE ADVERSARIES Hebrews 10:26-27 NASB

We may state the covenant/blessing of grace as follows:  God Almighty, having declared a second death in the afterlife for every sinner, bestows the gift of grace–eternal life in God Almighty’s presence free from His wrath–upon those whom He has called and chosen to have the blood of Jesus applied to their hearts to cover their sins.  In other words, God Almighty’s gift/blessing of grace places one’s name in the book of life, thereby avoiding God Almighty’s wrath of the second death in the lake of fire/hell.

A pattern for judgment day is the original Passover in Egypt when God Almighty commissioned Moses to bring the Israelites from slavery in Egypt to the freedom of the Promised Land.  Pharaoh’s stubbornness to release the Israelites (Ex 4:21) persisted through the first nine plaques brought upon the Egyptians by God Almighty.  The following table displays events of the original Passover, which occurred with the tenth and final plague, as a pattern for implementation of grace on judgment day.  In Section 4.9, we documented that Jesus fulfilled the role of the sacrificial Lamb of the spiritual Passover; therefore, we will not concern ourselves with those details in this discussion.

Table 7.3 Passover as Pattern for Grace

God Almighty pronounced death.  God Almighty announced the death of all the first-born of Egypt, including cattle.

And Moses said, “Thus says the LORD, ‘About midnight I am going out into the midst of Egypt, and all the first-born in the land of Egypt shall die, from the first-born of the Pharaoh who sits on his throne, even to the first-born of the slave girl who is behind the millstones; all the first-born of the cattle as well.’ ”  Exodus 11:4-5  NASB

“For I will go through the land of Egypt on that night, and will strike down all the first-born in the land of Egypt, both man and beast; and against all the gods of Egypt I will execute judgment – I am the LORD.”  Exodus 12:12  NASB

Similar to the original Passover in Egypt, God Almighty has decreed, for all of humanity, the death of the body in the physical realm and the second death in the lake of eternal fire in the afterlife.

…  all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God,  Romans 3:23  NASB

You get what is coming to you when you sinIt is death!  …  Romans 6:23  New Life Version

And if anyone’s name was not found written in the book of life, he was thrown into the lake of fire.  Revelation 20:15  NASB

However, God Almighty designated a segment of humanity to whom He would grant life.  In an exception to His decree of the death of all first-born in Egypt, God Almighty bestowed the gift of continued life on earth upon the first-born of the Israelites.

“But against any of the sons of Israel a dog shall not even bark, whether against man or beast, that you may understand how the LORD makes a distinction between Egypt and Israel.”  Exodus 11:7  NASB

(Note that escape from death for the Israelites was only temporary because they would eventually suffer the death of the body.)  Here are God Almighty’s instructions to the Israelites.

Your lamb shall be an unblemished male a year old; you may take it from the sheep or from the goats.  And you shall keep it until the fourteenth day of the same month, then the whole assembly of the congregation of Israel is to kill it at twilight.  Moreover, they shall take some of the blood and put it on the two door posts and on the lintel of the houses in which they eat it  Exodus 12:5-7  NASB

As with the original Passover, God Almighty has provided an exception from the second death in the afterlife.  By grace, a portion of humanity while alive on earth will be granted eternal life of the soul in the afterlife, free of God Almighty’s wrath.

“Truly, truly, I say to you, he who hears My word, and believes Him who sent Me, has eternal life, and does not come into judgment, but has passed out of death into life.”  John 5:24  NASB

The blood of the lamb is the means to life.  In Egypt, the blood of the sacrificial lamb was applied to the doors of the houses of the Israelites.

…  And the blood shall be a sign for you on the houses where you live; and when I see the blood I will pass over you, and no plague will befall you to destroy you when I strike the land of Egypt.”  Exodus 12:13  NASB

The blood of Jesus is the means of redemption for the sinner called and chosen for grace.

Since therefore, brethren, we have confidence to enter the holy place by the blood of Jesus,  …  let us draw near with a sincere heart in full assurance of faith, having our hearts sprinkled clean [by the blood of Jesus] from an evil conscience and our bodies washed with pure water.  Hebrews 10:19,22  NASB

The sacrificial lamb was to be consumed.  The Israelites ate the flesh of the sacrificial lamb.

“And they shall eat the flesh that same night, roasted with fire, and they shall eat it with unleavened bread and bitter herbs.”  Exodus 12:8  NASB

At His last meal, Jesus, the sacrificial Lamb, offered His body for His disciples, and all believers, to eat.

And while they were eating, Jesus took some bread, and after a blessing, He broke it and gave it to the disciples, and said, “Take, eat; this is my body.”  Matthew 26:26  NASB

Bread was also consumed. The Israelites were to eat unleavened bread with the flesh of the sacrificial lamb.

“And they shall eat the flesh that same night, roasted with fire, and they shall eat it with unleavened bread and bitter herbs.”  Exodus 12:8  NASB

Because of the sacrifice of Jesus, the believer is to have the unleavened bread of sincerity and truth.

Clean out the old leaven, that you may be a new lump, just as you are in fact unleavened.  For Christ our Passover also has been sacrificed.  Let us therefore celebrate the feast, not with old leaven, nor with the leaven of malice and wickedness, but with the unleavened bread of sincerity and truth 1Corinthians 5:7-8  NASB

After the Passover meal, there is a journey.  The Israelites were to eat the sacrificial lamb dressed for a journey to a new place.

“Now you shall eat it in this manner: with you loins girded, your sandals on your feet, and your staff in your hand; and you shall eat in haste – it is the Lord’s Passover.”  Exodus 12:11  NASB

The called and chosen believer, one to whom the blood of Jesus has been applied, is to embark upon a new walk.

Or do you not know that all of us who have been baptized into Christ Jesus have been baptized into His death?  Therefore we have been buried with Him through baptism into death, in order that as Christ was raised from the dead through the glory of the Father, so we too might walk in newness of life.  Romans 6:3-4  NASB

Death, as pronounced by God Almighty, is implemented.  At the original Passover, the death imposed by God Almighty upon Egypt was the death of the body of the first-born of a household.

Now it came about at midnight that the LORD struck all the first-born in the land of Egypt, from the first-born of Pharaoh who sat on his throne to the first-born of the captive who was in the dungeon, and all the first-born cattle.  And Pharaoh arose in the night, he and all his servants and all the Egyptians; and there was a great cry in Egypt, for there was no home where there was not someone dead Exodus 12:29-30  NASB

The night of death of the original Passover foreshadows judgment of the soul, that is, the eternal life-or-second death event for humanity after resurrection.  We have previously cited this description of judgment.

…  Then He will also say to those on His left, ‘Depart from Me, accursed ones, into the eternal fire which has been prepared for the devil and his angels;’ ”  Matthew 25:31-33,41  NASB

Thus, the unredeemed who do not have the blood of Jesus applied to their hearts will receive the second death in the lake of fire/hell.

There is life for God Almighty’s chosen.  That same night, the first-born of Israelite households where the blood of the sacrificial lamb was applied escaped the death of the body.

“that you shall say, ‘It is a Passover sacrifice to the LORD who passed over the houses of the sons of Israel in Egypt when He smote the Egyptians, but spared our homes.’ ”  And the people bowed low and worshiped.  Exodus 12:27  NASB

Similarly, those called and chosen by God Almighty to receive the blessing of grace will escape the wrath imposed by judgment and will receive the gift of eternal life.

For the wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.  Romans 6:23  NASB

Hence, judgment day will be a spiritual fulfillment of the original Passover.

The gift of grace will bring about the complete restoration of the three components of humanity.  First, the soul of humanity is restored and granted righteousness by Jesus’ substitutionary death.

For as through the one man’s disobedience the many were made sinners, even so through the obedience of the One the many will be made righteous.  Romans 5:19  NASB

Second, the spirit of humanity is restored by the change in spiritual fathers, that is, from a child of Satan to a child of God Almighty.

The Spirit Himself bears witness with our spirit that we are children of God, and if children, heirs also, heirs of God and fellow-heirs with Christ, if indeed we suffer with Him in order that we may also be glorified with Him.  Romans 8:16-17  NASB

Third, at the time of resurrection, the redeemed will have a spiritual body.

There are also heavenly bodies and earthly bodies, but the glory of the heavenly is one, and the glory of the earthly is another.  …  So also is the resurrection of the dead.  It is sown a perishable body, it is raised an imperishable body; it is sown in dishonor, it is raised in glory; it is sown in weakness, it is raised in power; it is sown a natural body, it is raised a spiritual bodyIf there is a natural body, there is also a spiritual body.  1Corinthians 15: 40,42-44  NASB

Thus, by the blessing of grace, the trinity of humanity will be restored and made acceptable to God Almighty so that one may enter His presence in heaven.

Any discussion of judgment day will eventually turn to consideration of the fate of those who have not heard the gospel preached.  The apostle Paul, in the first two chapters of his letter to the Romans, addressed the issue of judgment for those uninformed of the gospel.  First, Paul indicates that the physical world is a self-evident display of God Almighty’s expectation of humanity, and therefore there is no excuse of ungodliness on the part of anyone.

For the wrath of God is revealed from heaven against all ungodliness and unrighteousness of men, who suppress the truth in unrighteousness, because that which is known about God is evident within them; for God made it evident to themFor since the creation of the world His invisible attributes, His eternal power and divine nature, have been clearly seen, being understood through what has been made, so that they are without excuse.  Romans 1:18-20  NASB

We have mentioned the book by E. W. Bullinger The Witness of the Stars (1893) in which he writes that God Almighty and His plan were revealed for all times in the stars through the constellations of the zodiac (Section 1.3).

Second, there is reinforcement of that which is displayed in nature within the individual’s conscience.

When Gentiles, who do not have the Law [since it was given only to Jews], do instinctively the things the Law requires [guided only by their conscience], they are a law to themselves, though they do not have the Law.  They show that the essential requirements of the Law are written in their hearts; and their conscience [their sense of right and wrong, their moral choices] bearing witness and their thoughts alternately accusing or perhaps defending them on that day when, as my gospel proclaims, God will judge the secrets [all the hidden thoughts and concealed sins] of men through Christ Jesus.  Romans 2:14-16  Amplified Bible

An individual lacking specific knowledge of God Almighty’s covenants will be judged according to expectations set forth from without by God Almighty’s creation and from within by the conscience.  The implication here is that grace can and will be extended by God Almighty to those who have not heard it explicitly expressed.

And opening his mouth, Peter said:  “I most certainly understand now that God is not one to show partiality, but in every nation the man who fears Him and does what is right, is welcome to Him.”  Acts 10:34-35  NASB

Paul’s conclusion is that all, none excluded, will be judged, and that the judgment will be just.

Judgment day will divide humanity into two mutually exclusive groups.  Jesus spoke of this division.

Do you suppose that I came to grant peace on earth?  I tell you, no, but rather division;”  Luke 12:51  NASB

“Now it came about that the poor man died and he was carried away by the angels to Abraham’s bosom; and the rich man also died and was buried.  And in Hades he lifted up his eyes, being in torment, and saw Abraham far away, and Lazarus in his bosom.  And he cried out and said, ‘Father Abraham, have mercy on me, and send Lazarus, that he may dip the tip of his finger in water and cool off my tongue; for I am in agony in this flame.’  But Abraham said, ‘Child, remember that during your life you received good things, and likewise Lazarus bad things; but now he is being comforted here, and you are in agony.  And besides all this, between us and you there is a great chasm fixed, in order that those who wish to come over from here to you may not be able, and that none may cross over from there to us.’ ”  Luke 16:22-26  NASB

Of course, the unrepentant in the lake of fire/hell will want to cross the chasm to escape torment.  Jesus tells us that no one may cross the great chasm.  This division of humanity will separate spouses, children and parents, families, and friends.

After judgment, each person will be in the presence of their spiritual father.  The covenant/blessing of grace grants the Spirit of God Almighty in full to those entering heaven, where the redeemed will join God Almighty.  The saints will enter the world of light, life, and love.

But you have come to Mount Zion and to the city of the living God, the heavenly Jerusalem, and to myriads of angels, to the general assembly and church of the first-born who are enrolled in heaven, and to God, the judge of all, and to the spirits of righteous men made perfect,  Hebrews 12:22-23  NASB

Here, from the visions in Revelation, are descriptions of heaven which the recipients of grace will enter.

And I saw a new heaven and a new earth; for the first heaven and the first earth passed away, and there is no longer any sea.  And I saw the holy city, new Jerusalem, coming down out of heaven from God, made ready as a bride adorned for her husband.  And I heard a loud voice from the throne, saying, “Behold, the tabernacle of God is among men, and He shall dwell among them, and they shall be His people, and God himself shall be among them, and He shall wipe away every tear from their eyes; and there shall no longer be any death; there shall no longer be any mourning, or crying, or pain; the first things have passed away.”  Revelation 21: 1-4  NASB

And I saw no temple in it [the holy city, new Jerusalem], for the Lord God, the Almighty, and the Lamb, are its temple.  And the city has no need of the sun or of the moon to shine upon it, for the glory of God has illumined it, and its lamp is the LambAnd the nations shall walk by its light, and the kings of the earth shall bring their glory into it.  And in the daytime (for there shall be no night there) its gates shall never be closed; and they shall bring the glory and the honor of the nations into it; and nothing unclean and no one who practices abomination and lying, shall ever come into it, but only those whose names are written in the Lamb’s book of life Revelation 21:22-27  NASB

On the other hand, after judgment, the entirety of the kingdom of darkness will have been thrown into the lake of fire/hell: Satan, the antichrist, the beast, the false prophet, Satan’s angels, and the unrepentant sinners whose spiritual father is Satan.  The unrepentant dead, governed by the physical senses in life, are destined for the second death, a time of misery in the lake of fire/hell.  The apostle Paul gave us this description of the spiritual setting after judgment day.

For this you know with certainty, that no immoral or impure person or covetous man, who is an idolater, has an inheritance in the kingdom of Christ and God.  Let no one deceive you with empty words, for because of these things the wrath of God comes upon the sons of disobedience Ephesians 5:5-6  NASB

There are many scriptures telling us that spending eternity in the lake of fire/hell separated from the presence of the Lord (2Thess 1:9) is just reward for the unredeemed after resurrected.

For after all it is only just for God to repay with affliction those who afflict you, and to give relief to you who are afflicted and to us as well when the Lord Jesus shall be revealed from heaven with His mighty angels in flaming fire, dealing out retribution to those who do not know God and to those who do not obey the gospel of our Lord JesusAnd these will pay the penalty of eternal destruction, away from the presence of the Lord and from the glory of His power 2Thessalonians 1:6-9  NASB

Therefore consider the members of your earthly body as dead to immorality, impurity, passion, evil desire, and greed, which amounts to idolatry.  For it is on account of these things that the wrath of God will come,  Colossians 3:5-6  NASB

“Then He will also say to those on His left, ‘Depart from Me, accursed ones, into the eternal fire which has been prepared for the devil and his angels;’  …  And these will go away into eternal punishment, but the righteous into eternal life.”  Matthew 25:41,46  NASB

Here we are told that there is an eternal fire which has been prepared for the devil and his angels.  In addition, the unrepentant sinner will go away into eternal punishment in this lake of eternal fire.

It is a terrifying thing to fall into the hands of the living God.  Hebrews 10:31  NASB

Based on these and other scriptures, preachers of hellfire and brimstone declare that the unredeemed sinners, having received no grace, will spend eternity in the lake of fire/hell.  However, God Almighty has a blessing of mercy for them.
