There are numerous appearances of the terms “age” and “world” in the various English translations of the Bible.  Age refers to a period of time, a discrete period of history.  On the other hand, the general meaning of world is the earth populated with humanity.  Even thought the terms age and world have distinctly different meanings, we find that they are used interchangeably among the various translations.  Look at Ephesians 1:21 in two different translations.

Far above all principality, and power, and might, and dominion, and every name that is named, not only in this world, but also in that which is to come:  Ephesians 1:21  KJV

far above all rule and authority and power and dominion, and every name that is named, not only in this age, but also in the one to come.  Ephesians 1:21  NASB

The KJV translation suggests that the discussion concerns two different physical entities which include humans.  However, the NASB translation speaks of two different time periods.

Here is another discrepancy.
And have tasted the good word of God, and the powers of the world to come,  Hebrews 6:5  KJV

and have tasted the good word of God and the powers of the age to come,  Hebrews 6:5  NASB

Again, the KJV uses world while the NASB uses age.  Since the translations are not consistent, we must go to the original Greek text in search of the accurate meaning.  The Greek word used in Ephesians 1:21 and Hebrews 6:5 that is translated as world in the KJV and as age in the NASB is Strong’s Concordance G165 aion, which means a period of time or age.  Consequently, we find that the KJV translation inappropriately suggests that the verses speak of two different physical entities when the accurate meaning is two different periods of time.

However, scripture does speak of several worlds.
For when they maintain this [all continues just as it was from the beginning of creation], it escapes their notice that by the word of God the heavens existed long ago and the earth was formed out of water and by water, through which the world at that time was destroyed, being flooded with water.  But the present heavens and earth by His word are being reserved for fire, kept for the day of judgment and destruction of ungodly men.  2Peter 3:5-7  NASB

In this scripture, the Greek word in the original which is translated as world is Strong’s Concordance G2889 kosmos, which means the world with its inhabitants.  Consequently the flood at the time of Noah brought “the end of the world” for the evil peoples of the earth.  Note that the last sentence of the verse tells of a future end for the present world with the destruction of ungodly men by means of fire.  A few verses later (2Peter 3:13), Peter speaks of new heavens and a new earth.  So our earth is to host at least three worlds.  One has passed at the time of Noah, we are in the second, and there is one yet to come.  There has been an “end of the world” by water, and the present world is reserved for an end by fire.  As we gain clarity of God Almighty’s plan, we will learn about the “end of the world” by fire.

We return to the idea of age and consider these three translations of 1Corinthians 10:11.
Now these things happened to them as an example, and they were written for our instruction, upon whom the ends of the ages have come.    NASB

Now all these things happened unto them for ensamples; and they are written for our admonition, upon whom the ends of the world are come.  KJV

And all these things as types did happen to those persons, and they were written for our admonition, to whom the end of the ages did come,    Young’s Literal

The word translated as ages or world is aion, so the instruction is for those upon whom the end of the age(s) will come.  Next is a verse that gives some descriptive information about the age that included the time of the disciples.

who gave Himself for our sins, that He might deliver us out of this present evil age, according to the will of our God and Father,  Galatians 1:4  NASB

Consider the following verses.
“And whoever shall speak a word against the Son of Man, it shall be forgiven him; but whoever shall speak against the Holy Spirit, it shall not be forgiven him, either in this age, or in the age to come.”  Matthew 12:32  NASB

Jesus said, “Truly I say to you, there is no one who has left house or brothers or sisters or mother or father or children or farms, for My sake and for the gospel’s sake, but that he shall receive a hundred times as much now in the present age, houses and brothers and sisters and mothers and children and farms, along with persecutions; and in the world [aion, thus age] to come, eternal life.”  Mark 10:29-30  NASB

In these verses, Jesus and the apostle Paul make it clear that time is measured by ages.  Therefore, in addition to the common units of time like hour, day, year, century, and millennium, the Bible also speaks of a larger unit of time, the age.

Many of the occurrences of “age” as a unit of time are in verses that speak of the “end of the age.”

and the enemy who sowed them is the devil, and the harvest is the end of the age; and the reapers are the angels.  Matthew 13:39  NASB

And as he was sitting on the Mount of Olives, the disciples came to Him privately, saying, “Tell us, when will these things be, and what will be the sign of Your coming, and of the end of the age?”  Matthew 24:3  NASB

These verses signal that important events occur at the end of an age, so the ending of one age and the beginning of another is an important time when significant events of God Almighty’s plan occur.  As we proceed in the study, we will find that ages end with destruction implemented because of judgment.

Consider these three translations of the same verse.
to the only God our Savior, through Jesus Christ our Lord, be glory, majesty, dominion and authority, before all time and now and forever.  Amen.  Jude 25  NASB

To the only wise God our Saviour, be glory and majesty, dominion and power, both now and ever. Amen  Jude 25  KJV

To the only wise God our Saviour, [is] glory and greatness, power, and authority, both now and to all the ages!  Jude 25  YLT

The Greek word “aion” is translated as “forever” in the New American Standard and as “ever” in the King James translations. Both of these translations give the impression of eternity.  Notice that the Young’s Literal translation respects the meaning of “aion” and translates it as “to all the ages.”  So, we are forewarned to examine carefully any mention of time on a large scale in the various translations.
